6.5x55mm cartidges have roots as far back as the late 1800's when it was being developed for use by the militaries of Sweden and Norway, leading to the creation of the 6.5x55 Swedish (also known as the 6.5x55 Krag and 6.5x55 Mauser). The 6.5×54mm Mannlicher-Schönauer saw great success on African safaris by one of the most famous elephant hunters of all time, Walter D.M. Bell, who took 300 of his 1,500+ elephants with the cartridge from 1895 to 1930. The 6.5mm saw continued use through World War II with the Japanese 6.5×50mmSR Arisaka and the Italian 6.5×52mm Carcano, perhaps the most famous of the bunch as it was the cartridge used in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The 6.5mm was also adapted for hunting use in America with the development of the .260 Remington, .264 Winchester Magnum, 6.5mm Creedmoor and the 6.5mm Grendel.
